About Highland Shrooms – UK Fungi & Botanical Specialists
A Passion for Amanita Muscaria, Wild Fungi and Botanicals
Highland Shrooms is an independent UK botanical and mycology business based in Hampshire, with connections across Europe.
Our fascination with fungi began with the extraordinary Amanita muscaria, commonly known as the fly agaric mushroom. Recognised by its distinctive red cap and white spots, this species has a fascinating natural history and a long association with European folklore.
Today, our interests extend beyond Amanita muscaria to include other fungal species, traditional botanicals, flowers and botanical extraction methods.
Our Experience with Amanita Muscaria
Amanita muscaria is one of Britain’s most recognisable woodland mushrooms, but there’s much more to this species than its appearance.
It forms important relationships with trees, particularly birch, pine and spruce, and can be found in suitable British habitats during the autumn months.
Through our interest in foraging, photography and mycology, we’ve developed a lasting appreciation for its ecology, identification characteristics and cultural history.
We believe that understanding a mushroom begins with understanding its natural habitat, rather than simply looking at the finished botanical material.
Our work connects the woodlands of southern England with the varied landscapes of Scotland.
We value responsible foraging, species identification and consideration for the habitats in which fungi grow.
Where botanical materials are sourced through external suppliers, we aim to work with people who share those principles.
Exploring Botanical Extraction
Alongside our interest in wild fungi, Highland Shrooms explores traditional plants and modern extraction techniques.
Our work includes ultrasonic extraction, botanical preparation and the study of different plant and fungal materials.
We aim to be transparent about our processes and clear about the intended use and limitations of our products.
Responsible Mycology and Botanical Education
Amanita muscaria contains psychoactive compounds, including muscimol and ibotenic acid, and can cause serious adverse effects if ingested.
We believe accurate identification, responsible handling and an understanding of the legal and safety considerations surrounding fungi are essential.
Our educational information is intended to encourage informed, responsible interest in the natural world.
Independent, Curious and Rooted in Nature
Highland Shrooms is built around a genuine interest in wild places, fungi and botanical traditions.
We’re continually learning, exploring and developing our knowledge, and we welcome others who share that curiosity.
Highland Shrooms — rooted in nature, inspired by fungi.
